Mental illness (Symptoms, causes and treatment)

Mental well-being entails more than the absence of mental illnesses. Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all part of our mental health. It has an impact on the way we think, feel, and act. It is a state of well-being in which a person recognizes his or her abilities, is able to cope with everyday challenges, works productively, and contributes to his or her community.

A variety of socioeconomic, biological, and environmental factors influence mental health. If you have mental health difficulties, you’re thinking, mood, and behaviour may be altered throughout your life. Biological variables such as genes or brain chemistry, as well as life experiences such as trauma or abuse, and a family history of mental health problems all play a role in mental health disorders.

Not sure if you or someone you know is suffering from mental illness? Mental health issues are common, but assistance is available. People suffering from mental illnesses can recover, and many do. Having one or more of the following feelings or behaviours can be a warning sign of a problem:

• Eating or sleeping too much or too little
• Pulling away from people and usual activities

• Having unexplained aches and pains
• Feeling helpless or hopeless
• Smoking, drinking or using drugs more than usual
• Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared
• Yelling or fighting with family and friends
• Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships
• Having persistent thoughts and memories you can’t get out of your head
• Hearing voices or believing things that are not true
• Thinking of harming yourself or others
• Inability to perform daily tasks like taking care of your kids or getting to work or school.

Positive mental health allows people to:

• Realize their full potential.
• Cope with the stresses of life.
• Work productively.
• Make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Ways to maintain positive mental health include:

• Getting professional help if you need it
• Connecting with others
• Staying positive
• Getting physically active
• Helping others
• Getting enough sleep
