Dealing with Disappointment

Disappointment is an emotion that is prevalent amongst many of us. It is a natural part of life that occurs when one’s hopes or expectations are not met. Many factors lead to disappointment, for instance, arguments, heartbreaks, betrayals, relationships, and the likes. It’s not an easy feeling to bear, but there are both healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with this seemingly unavoidable emotion.

Some people can overcome their disappointments. They find the strength to reflect on what transpired, draw lessons, and move on. They emerge stronger from such an ordeal, whereas others struggle. The latter may even experience depression or some other psychological disorders. Major disappointments are often defining moments in some people’s lives. Constructively dealing with disappointment can be a self-healing process that promotes personal growth and resilience.

While it is acceptable to grieve in moments of disappointment, try not to dwell on the negative emotions for too long. Too much time and energy spent on disappointment will have a negative impact on your mood and mental health. You can think about what you could do differently the next time. You may need to make an effort to focus on positive thinking strategies to let go. Positive self-talk, journaling, daily affirmations, and surrounding yourself with positive people can help.

Allow yourself time to process what went wrong, grieve, and consider the circumstances which led to that disappointment. Was the outcome predictable, unexpected, or beyond your control? When you understand the why, you will be better able to manage your emotions and rationalize the scenario.
